Intro to Type

Have you ever noticed that the way you think is completely different to those around you? Like you’re seeing the world through a different lens?

In turns out that there are little known secret codes that run your mind - and these little codes can explain why two people can look at the same situation, and jump to different conclusions.

Okay, well what are these codes? And where did they come from?

What is Type?

In 1913, psychologist Carl Gustov Jung published "Psychological Types." In this book, he proposed 8 distinct functions that affect how people see and navigate the world, which he named the 8 "cognitive functions."

When understood properly - these functions are like the baseline character statistics for the players in the game of life. They are unique to each of us, but reappear over and over in predictable personality archetypes. There are multiple frameworks out there, and these different lenses provide different perspectives in understanding types. Several popular frameworks, like the 16 Personality Types, Enneagram, Socionics, and more help us understand personality types through different angles! Mastering these codes offers a way to view human personalities as a fascinating interconnected system, where each individual's unique perspective contributes to the bigger picture.

What’s more, if you can understand and master these codes, you have a playbook for life! You’ll find yourself sailing through conflicts, avoiding miscommunication, and having a map of the terrain that let’s you better navigate relationship problems that too many of us walk head-first into over and over again.

At Type School, not only do we teach you how models of human personality and behavior works, but we also teach you how to apply the knowledge to your life to enhance your career, relationships, and overall wellbeing.

How do I find out my type?

You might be thinking... “So what is my Type?”

When it comes to finding your Type - we recommend a slow and curious approach. Consider it like finding your style - It’s okay to be wrong at first, wear a few hats, experiment, and see what fits you.

As you learn more about Type through our platform, you will improve your mental models of how the system works as a whole, and this will enable you to have a clearer picture of where you fit, allowing you to easily see your own type and the types of those around you.

What about online tests?

Tests can still be a good way to begin as they can help point you in a general direction. If you’re just starting out and want to know which tests we recommend, you can look at our guide to personality tests.

While tests can be a great short term indicator to get you in the right ball park, our personality really shines when we engage with others. This is why at Type School we recommend booking a session with one of our resident Typologists who carry out guided sessions along with tests to help explain what functions you use and how they show up for you.

As you follow our guides, courses, and events, keep your mind open around your type. It’s okay to change your mind with new information - that’s how learning works!

Why should I know my type?

Let's talk about the perks:

Understand your strengths and weaknesses

As Einstein is famously (and likely incorrectly) quoted as saying “If you judge a fish on its ability to climb a tree, it will lead it’s whole life thinking it’s stupid.” The same is true for your type.

Understanding type helps you make better decisions about which arenas you want to play in in life (and which ones to avoid) - this knowledge can drastically increase your confidence, and help you land more wins in life.

Improve your relationships

Knowing your personality type can greatly improve your communication with others, leading to stronger and more meaningful relationships. By understanding your own strengths and weaknesses, you can identify areas for improvement and work towards becoming a better communicator.

Understanding the personality types of those around you can help you anticipate their needs and tailor your communication style to better connect with them. This can be especially important in the workplace, where effective communication can lead to increased productivity, better teamwork, and a more positive work environment.

Grow as a person

Understanding your personality type isn't just about decoding how you perceive the world, but also a catalyst for personal growth. With insights into your strengths and weaknesses, it aids self-awareness and enhances decision-making. This knowledge guides goal-setting, fosters adaptability, and boosts emotional intelligence, leading to more meaningful relationships and resilience. Embracing personal growth through your personality type equips you to navigate life's challenges, learn continuously, and become a more intentional and fulfilled individual, supported by the resources and community at Type School.

At Type School, we not only teach you about your type, but we also pair you with people of your own type (through our Type House system) - so you can hang out, learn, and grow together. You can meet people further along the path and get mentored by their personal successes and life hacks.
